Zilker Park After ACL Fest 2026: Who Sets Reopening Dates?

"That space needs to be available for the public again," Council Member Ryan Alter told KXAN on Saturday, after a little more than half an inch of Friday and Saturday rain turned the Great Lawn to mud. Gates for day two of ACL Fest opened two hours late, at 2 p.m. Crews spread mulch and regraded what they could, and Alter, who represents District 5, called the damage "unacceptable."

The date posted around the park is Sunday, October 18. Austin Parks and Recreation lists the Great Lawn as closed from September 21 through that day. For anyone who lives within walking distance of Zilker, that date covers less than it seems to. This fall, the park is coming back in pieces. Each piece is controlled by a different party, and several of them have no published end date at all.

The lawn runs on a festival contract

The Great Lawn's schedule belongs to ACL Fest's contract with the city, not to the parks department's calendar. A PARD spokesperson told KXAN that under that contract, the festival restores the Great Lawn and surrounding areas every year, including replacing any grass that needs it. C3 Presents said it repairs Zilker after every festival "and this year will be no different."

The city's own wording is that "all efforts are exhausted to open Zilker Park's Great Lawn as soon as possible." Neither PARD's closure page nor KXAN's reporting gives a target date for reopening the lawn after October 18. October 18 is when the scheduled closure ends. Whether new sod is ready by then depends on how much of the lawn needs replacing after a second weekend of crowds on wet ground.

ACL's second weekend runs October 9 through 11, so the lawn takes another three days of festival crowds before the full post-festival restoration the contract requires.

The roads and lots follow the teardown schedule

The pavement around the park reopens in stages, and the schedule is easy to misread. During each festival weekend, Barton Springs Road is closed from 7 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Monday. That means 7 p.m. on October 8 through 6 a.m. on October 12. Azie Morton Road closes from 11 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on each festival day. Barton Springs Pool stays open the whole time, but on festival weekends swimmers can only get in through the Azie Morton Road entrance.

The disruption continues after the music ends:

What When it lifts Detail
Barton Springs Road lane reductions Oct. 12–16, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Teardown traffic
Stratford Drive closures Oct. 14–16, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Teardown traffic
Stratford Road Lot Closed Sept. 14 through Oct. 18 Longest lot closure
Pecan Grove and Polo Picnic lots Closed Sept. 18 through Oct. 18
Rock Garden Lot Closed Sept. 23 through Oct. 18
Disc Golf, Moonlight Tower and Playscape lots Closed Sept. 28 through Oct. 18 Disc golf course and playscape stay open

Two city sources disagree about Stratford Drive after the second weekend. The parks closure page says the event closure ends at 6 a.m. on Monday, October 12. The city's ACL Mobility Guide says 6 p.m. If you drive Stratford to get to MoPac on that Monday morning, plan around the later time.

The Botanical Garden has a new operator

The Zilker Botanical Garden's schedule changed this week for reasons that have nothing to do with ACL. As of October 1, the garden is under full City of Austin management. The Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy had voted not to renew its agreement, which expired September 30. KUT reports that the Conservancy had run the garden since at least 2015 and handled admissions, the gift shop, education programs, and plant shows and sales. Before the change, the city only maintained the grounds.

The 28-acre garden, with its koi ponds, waterfalls and native plantings, is closed from October 1 through October 16 for abatement, renovation and maintenance. It reopens Friday, October 16. One section of the city's garden page lists the reopening day as a Wednesday, but October 16, 2026 is a Friday.

Here is what is known about the garden under city management:

  • The city says it will honor current Conservancy memberships and continue its partnership with the Austin Area Garden Council. Its transition memo also names the council's affiliated clubs as continuing partners.
  • No new membership terms, admission prices, hours, programming or gift-shop arrangements have been announced.
  • The city's garden page still lists fall and winter hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the existing prices: $6 resident and $8 nonresident for adults, $3 and $4 for youth, and $5 and $7 for seniors. The same page also still refers visitors to the Conservancy for tickets, so treat those prices as previously published rather than confirmed.
  • The Conservancy's Garden Gnome Grove opened September 19 and is listed as running through Sunday, November 8, with a closing celebration that day. The Conservancy is listed as the organizer, so whether it continues under the city is unconfirmed.

The garden's partnership with the Austin Area Garden Council goes back more than 50 years. No fall plant-sale dates from the garden clubs have been posted yet. The garden website's event pages for October, November and December now return a "nothing found" notice.

The pieces with no date

Some parts of Zilker don't have a published schedule from anyone.

The bathhouse rotunda. At the Joan Means Khabele Bathhouse, swimmers can enter from the pool side and use the renovated restrooms and showers, and the front lot is mostly open again. The rotunda main entry and the west-side work area are still closed, according to a city listing last updated June 24. The project page targeted summer 2026 for finishing the rotunda. That target has passed, and no new date has been posted.

The wall behind it. A separate project to repair the Barton Springs retaining wall was scheduled to start September 8. Vegetation and tree removal is scheduled for September, assessment and design for September through December, and the wall repairs themselves for early 2027. The city expects the pool to stay open.

The Zilker Eagle. The miniature train has been closed for Fall Break since Monday, September 28. Its notice asks visitors to wait for reopening information and gives no date. The city's Zilker Loop shuttle is a separate service, and its 2026 season ended September 7.

The long-range plan. The Zilker Vision Plan is still suspended. The city's page says the interim City Manager told parks staff to stop work on August 7, 2023, before final presentations to Council, and no restart has been posted. Big-picture decisions about how the park is used are on hold, while the event calendar that leans on the park keeps getting busier.

The next event is already on the calendar

This is why the Great Lawn's repair timeline matters more than usual this year. The Trail of Lights runs December 10 through 23, from 7 to 10 p.m. nightly. The Night Lights preview party is Friday, December 4. From the end of the lawn closure on October 18 to the preview party is about seven weeks. Trail of Lights setup has to happen within those weeks, and the event's FAQ still lists its street closures and full park closure dates as "coming soon."

Alter raised this concern directly. He told KXAN he was worried about what the park would look like for events scheduled later this year.

If you're planning December evenings around the trail, entry is free on some nights and $8 on others:

  • Free general admission: December 10–11 and December 13–17
  • $8 general admission: December 12 and December 18–23

The Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail has a closure of its own starting the same day the lawn closure ends. Beginning October 18, the south-shore boardwalk at I-35 closes for one week. After that, part of the boardwalk will have restricted access through early 2027. The city says access under I-35 stays open.

Piece of Zilker Who controls the schedule Published date
Great Lawn ACL contract restoration, with PARD Closure ends Oct. 18; no confirmed reopening
Zilker lots and roads Teardown schedule Lots through Oct. 18; roads through Oct. 16
Botanical Garden City of Austin, as of Oct. 1 Reopens Oct. 16; terms not announced
Bathhouse rotunda City project Summer 2026 target passed
Zilker Eagle Train operator No reopening date
Butler boardwalk at I-35 TxDOT crews Oct. 18 for one week, then restricted through early 2027
Trail of Lights Event organizers Dec. 10–23; setup dates pending

Barton Springs Pool, the Butler Trail, the Barton Creek Greenbelt, the disc golf course and the playscape have stayed open through the entire ACL closure period.

For many people in 78704, living near Zilker is a big part of why they chose the area, and that access depends on event contracts, operating agreements and project schedules that rarely make it into a home search. At Cody Hobza, we follow how those schedules affect the blocks around the park, from festival road closures to the parking that disappears for weeks at a time. If you're weighing a home near Zilker and want a clear picture of what the park's calendar means for daily life on a specific street, let's connect.
